Trico Building Apartments

Location

Buffalo, NY

Estimated Construction Cost

$115 million

Project Overview

Buffalo Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design and construction administration services for the core and shell and buildout for $115 million Trico Building Apartments project, a remarkable redevelopment of the historic Trico windshield wiper factory. The 600,000 SF building has 242 apartments, 60,000 SF of commercial space, a rooftop terrace, coworking space, conference room, media room, fitness center and enclosed heated parking for more than 240 cars.

The Trico project spanned almost ten years and underwent several usage changes and design iterations. After remedial work was completed, the project was paused in early 2020, shortly after covid hit. Work restarted in 2022 with additional residential units replacing the previously proposed extended stay hotel. The amount of commercial space was also reduced.

Vacant since 1999, the Trico complex was placed on the New York State Historic Registry in 2000 and the National Historic Registry in 2001. Project funding included historic and brownfield tax credits from the state and federal governments.
