Project Overview

The Historic Post Office Building, also known as the Lockport Federal Building, was originally constructed in 1902 with an annex added in 1932. It consists of three floors and a lower level totaling approximately 33,700 SF. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Buffalo Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire alarm system design and construction administration services for the $6.1 million renovation of all floors to house offices, a restaurant, and retail and studio space.

New features of the renovation were the addition of an elevator at the east side of the building and a new commercial kitchen with hoods and a grease interceptor. To the extent possible, the existing historic lighting and plumbing fixtures were saved and were reused in place. Mechanical systems for lower level spaces were designed to provide flexibility to reconfigure spaces over time to accommodate a mix of tenants. Electrical design included a new main distribution panel, electric meters, and sub-meters. Our work also included evaluation of existing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and gas supply system infrastructure for reuse and replacement.

The project won the 2024 Business First “Brick by Brick Award” in the Historic Renovation category.
