Hope House

Location

Buffalo, NY

Estimated Construction Cost

$13 million

Project Overview

Buffalo Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering services for the $13 million substantial rehabilitation and conversion of the former Buffalo Public School #57 into apartments and a multi-purpose community service facility.

The renovation transformed the 100+ year old vacant building into a center providing trauma-informed care and a “focused” homeless shelter for women and children. The building consists of 27 units of permanent and supportive housing; a new home for the Matt Urban Hope Center and its Urban Diner; a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that supports the diner and provides a new opportunity for workforce development programming; a community health clinic; and a large food pantry.

Funding for the project includes the NYS Division of Homes and Community Renewal, Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, and Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency. The project is also receiving historic tax credits.

Richardson Olmsted Complex building with two central towers and modern glass entrance, surrounded by trees and lampposts.
